When a missing preceptor pushes back your MRU graduation
MRU's clinical courses follow a fixed order, so a clinical course that cannot start on time usually moves everything after it back by a semester. Because MRU offers no leave of absence, a term without a preceptor also touches your enrollment, your academic progress and the credit limits on your program.

Why one late clinical course moves the finish line
Each clinical course at MRU is a prerequisite for the next. In the MSN-FNP, MSN6050 and MSN6150 both require MSN5700, and MSN6400 requires every clinical course before it. The PMHNP and AGACNP certificates must be taken in program order.
With MRU now running 16-week semesters, missing the start of one clinical course usually costs a full semester, and the courses behind it slide with it. Part-time FNP students take one clinical course per semester, so every slip lands directly on the graduation date.

No leave of absence means a gap term needs a plan
MRU has no leave-of-absence option at all. Stepping away means a formal withdrawal handled by the Office of Academic Affairs, followed later by a re-entry application to Admissions, which is a much bigger step than pressing pause.
Two further rules shape a term without a clinical course. Fourteen consecutive calendar days of unexcused absence from all your courses triggers automatic withdrawal, and you count as enrolled in a semester only if you have at least one scheduled class. The limits that make repeated delays expensive
MRU checks satisfactory academic progress at the end of every semester. Graduate students need a cumulative GPA of 3.0, must complete at least 67% of the credits they attempt, and cannot go past 150% of the program's length in attempted credits. Reaching that ceiling means dismissal.
A W leaves your GPA alone but counts against the completion percentage and the timeframe. A pair of Ws in one course is treated as a failure, and a third W in one course, or three spread across concentration courses, leads to dismissal. Money and timing around the add/drop week
The add/drop window is the first instructional week. Dropping during that week removes the charges, but once add/drop has passed, the catalog treats the semester's tuition as fully earned. If your clinical course cannot start, the decision point is that first week, not mid-term.
Registration runs on its own clock. You can self-register from 20 days before the semester until add/drop closes, and your liability insurance proof has to be with MRU 15 or more days before the externship begins, or the course may be taken off your schedule. A preceptor approved after those dates may come too late for that semester.

What a later graduation changes after MRU
Graduation is not the only date that moves. For Florida APRN licensure, the Board of Nursing asks for a master's degree or post-master's certificate, proof of national certification, proof of malpractice insurance or an exemption, and electronic fingerprinting, so certification and licensing follow graduation in sequence.
A one-semester slip therefore shifts every later step with it: the certification exam, the license application and any job start that depends on them. If you have an offer tied to a date, tell the employer early and keep them informed as your clinical plan firms up.

Questions MRU students ask
Can I pause my MRU program while I look for a preceptor?
Not formally. MRU has no leave of absence, so the choices are staying enrolled in at least one scheduled course, or withdrawing through the Office of Academic Affairs and later applying for re-entry through Admissions. Speak to your program chair before stepping away, because the route back runs through a formal re-entry request.
Will I get my tuition back if my clinical course can't start?
It depends on timing. Dropping during the first instructional week removes the charges, while after the add/drop deadline the catalog treats the semester's tuition as fully earned. If you already know in week one that you have no approved preceptor, raise it then, and confirm the money side with MRU in writing before you drop anything.
Is MRU's appointed preceptor a way to avoid a delay?
It is an option worth asking about. MRU will appoint a preceptor for any student who comes without one, charging its one-time Practicum Affiliation Fee. MRU does not publish how quickly that happens or where the appointed preceptor will be, so ask both questions before relying on it. Our comparison page sets the choices side by side.
Does a late graduation affect my FNP certification and license?
Yes, indirectly. The certification exam and your Florida APRN application both come after graduation, and Florida asks for proof of national certification before it issues the license. Each semester your clinical courses slip moves those steps back by the same amount, along with any job that depends on the license.
How early should I line up the preceptor for my next clinical course?
MRU publishes no deadline for naming a preceptor and no approval time, so work back from the dates it does publish. Registration opens 20 days before the semester, MRU wants your insurance proof 15 or more days ahead of the externship, and the preceptor must be approved before your first clinical day. Starting while the current course is running leaves room for a refusal.
