The dates that set your clock

MRU's September 2026 calendar addendum moved every semester to 16 weeks, split into two 8-week modules that carry their own add/drop and W deadlines. These are the semester-level dates for the next three terms.

Count back 15 days from your first clinical day to find the insurance deadline, and remember that approval has to land before that first day too. The calendar page lists the module dates for each term. Reading this during Fall 2026? Unless your clinical course runs in the second 8-week module, which starts October 26, the next start is Spring 2027.

This week: run everything in parallel

Pin down the course. Confirm the course code, whether it runs for the full semester or a module, and the population it needs. A search for MSN6150 pediatrics and one for MSN5041C acute care go to very different places.
Start clearance today. American Data Bank clearance, the Level II background check with fingerprints and your drug screen do not depend on having a preceptor.
Fix immunizations and CPR. MRU accepts immunization records only from a provider licensed in Florida, and it requires a flu shot every year. The on-campus MRU Health clinic (third floor) can handle TB, Hepatitis B, MMR, varicella, Tdap, titers, CPR and physicals; see health records.
Get insurance in place. Apply through MRU's clinical department or buy your own individual policy, so the 15-day proof deadline is not what stops you. The insurance page covers both paths.
Search wide, all at once. Contact many practices in the same few days, each with your course, dates and total hours in the first message.
Ask MRU two questions. Ask your approver what a complete packet looks like and how to submit it, and ask the Office of Academic Affairs the latest date to request an MRU-appointed preceptor as a backup.

Where fast yeses come from

On a short clock, aim at places that can decide quickly. A private practice or community clinic where the clinician or owner can say yes in one conversation moves faster than a system that needs institutional paperwork first.

Hospital routes are slower by design. Baptist Health South Florida, for example, requires two signed agreements with the school (a Master Agreement and a Program Letter of Agreement) and student profiles through Complio at least 10 business days before the start. One HCA Florida hospital page asked for placement requests at least a month ahead. Those timelines rarely fit a search that starts three weeks out.

Warm leads beat cold calls when time is short: clinicians you have worked with, your own providers, and practices where someone can vouch for you. The South Florida guide covers the local landscape.

Keep MRU's appointment route open

While you search, keep the other door open. If you arrive without a preceptor, MRU will assign one and charge its one-time Practicum Affiliation Fee. Ask now how late you can still request it; if your own search fails in the second week, you do not want to learn the window has already closed.

MRU does not publish how quickly an appointed preceptor is found, so treat this as a hedge, not a shortcut. The appointment still ends in the same approval, and the course's hours are still due by its last day. Weigh the two routes on the comparison page before the deadline to choose passes you by. It is also fair to ask what happens if MRU cannot find someone in time.

Starting late: do the hours still fit?

All practicum hours, logs, case lists and the evaluation signed by preceptor, clinical instructor and student are due by the course's last day. So divide what the course needs by the weeks you will actually have.

Take MSN5700. MRU prints no clinical-hour figure for it, but its 45-hours-per-credit rule gives about 225 clinical hours by our calculation. If approval lands at the end of week four of a 16-week semester, that is roughly 19 hours a week for 12 weeks, on top of coursework and any job. If it lands at the end of week eight, the pace jumps to about 28 hours a week.

If the numbers only work on paper, planning for the next semester may be the wiser call, and making that call before the W deadline keeps a WF off your record.

When the dates will not work

Deciding before a deadline gives you better options than deciding after it.

Until add/drop closes, dropping the clinical course removes its charges; after that, the semester's tuition is fully earned.
Up to the course's midpoint, a withdrawal is recorded as a W, which leaves GPA alone but counts toward completion rate and maximum timeframe.
Past the midpoint, withdrawal becomes a WF and is treated as a failure.
MRU has no leave of absence, and a student counts as enrolled while at least one class is scheduled.

See your program advisor or associate dean, who handle withdrawals, before you drop anything; the PMHNP and AGACNP certificates require courses in program order, so one change can shift the rest. If you want an honest read on your dates, contact the placement desk.

Questions MRU students ask

Is there a typical wait for MRU's preceptor approval?

No public figure exists; approval details live in the nursing student handbook, which only enrolled students can open. Plan as if it takes a while: send a complete packet the day your preceptor agrees, answer MRU email within the 24 hours MRU expects, and ask your approver whether anything is missing.

Can I buy liability insurance before I have a preceptor?

Yes, and on a short timeline it is sensible. MRU requires every nursing student to hold an active individual liability policy before any externship and to keep it active until graduation, with proof at least 15 days before the start. MRU's clinical department can arrange a policy and bill it through MRU, or you can bring your own.

Can I register for the clinical course before my preceptor is approved?

MRU's public documents do not tie registration to preceptor approval. Registration opens to students 20 days ahead of each semester and stays open until add/drop ends. Your handbook or program may add conditions, so ask your approver whether an unapproved preceptor will hold up your registration or your first clinical day.

Does the 8-week module structure buy me more time?

Possibly, depending on how your course is scheduled. From Fall 2026, each 16-week semester splits into two 8-week modules, and each module has separate add/drop and W dates. A clinical course that runs across the full semester follows the semester dates, so check your schedule on the MRU PORTAL to see which applies to you.

Will a placement service promise me a preceptor by a date?

A preceptor date rests on MRU's approval and the practice's own schedule, so the most useful offer is speed and a clear read on your dates. We move as quickly as the search allows, contact several practices at once when time is short, and tell you plainly if the dates look unrealistic while you still have options.
