Liability insurance for MRU externships

Before any externship, every MRU nursing student must hold an individual liability insurance policy, and that coverage has to run until graduation. MRU wants proof no later than 15 days before your externship begins; miss that and the course may come off your schedule. Buy through MRU's clinical department and be billed by MRU, or bring your own policy.

The rule, condition by condition

MRU's catalog sets three conditions. The policy must be individual, meaning coverage in your own name. It must be active before any externship. And it must stay active until you graduate, not only for the term you are in.

The deadline is the part that catches people. Proof of coverage is due at least 15 days before the externship start date. If it arrives late, the catalog says the course may be dropped from your schedule, and in a program where clinical courses build on each other, one dropped course can push later ones back.

Two certificates repeat the rule in their admission lists. PMHNP applicants have to prove they hold student liability coverage before their first clinical, and the AGACNP certificate lists liability insurance among its admission items alongside current ACLS and BLS.

Two ways to get covered

MRU gives you a choice. You can apply through the clinical department and have MRU bill you for the policy, or you can buy your own and submit proof. The catalog names the clinical department as the office that helps with insurance, and an older MRU directory page lists a Clinical Operations department.

Questions to settle either way

  • Is the policy individual and in your name, rather than an employer's group coverage?
  • Does it cover you as a student in the role you are training for, such as a nurse practitioner student, and not only as an RN?
  • Does the effective date start at least 15 days before your first externship day?
  • Will it need renewing before you graduate, and who will remind you?
  • What limits does MRU or your site expect? MRU does not publish coverage limits in its public documents, so ask.

If you already carry malpractice coverage through your RN job, do not assume it satisfies MRU. MRU asks for an individual policy, and a policy bought by an employer may only cover you while you work for that employer. Get a written answer before you rely on it.

Counting back 15 days

The table applies the 15-day rule to start dates in MRU's Fall 2026 to Fall 2028 Academic Calendar Addendum. It assumes your externship begins on the first day of the semester or module; if yours starts later, count back from that date instead. Self-registration opens 20 days before each semester, so the insurance deadline lands only days after registration opens.

Treat the last column as the final possible day, not the target. Every date in it is a Sunday, and the Spring one lands just before the winter holidays, so file earlier. For how semesters and modules work, see MRU's academic calendar for clinicals.

Proof filed 14 days before your externship is late. The rule says at least 15.

What a late or lapsed policy does

The catalog's stated consequence is that the course may be dropped from the schedule. That is more serious than it sounds. MSN clinical courses carry prerequisites, and both the PMHNP and AGACNP certificates run their courses in a fixed order, so losing one clinical course can shift the rest of your plan by a term or more.

It also collides with hour deadlines. All practicum hours have to be completed with a preceptor MRU has approved before the course's final day, and a late start compresses the time you have. A policy that lapses mid-program breaks the rule that coverage stays active until graduation, and MRU does not publish a grace period for fixing it.

If a dropped course has already pushed your timeline, our page on delayed graduation covers the knock-on effects and how to limit them.

Your policy versus your preceptor's

Your student policy covers you. It does not replace the coverage your preceptor or the site carries, and MRU's published insurance rule is written for students only. Keep a PDF of your certificate of insurance on your phone and laptop in case your site or preceptor asks to see it.

In Florida, insurance comes up again after graduation. The Board of Nursing asks APRN applicants for proof of malpractice insurance or an exemption, and APRNs who register for autonomous practice must show professional liability coverage or a letter of credit, with some exemptions. Those are licensure requirements, separate from the student policy MRU asks for now.

When you line up a preceptor for next term, put insurance on the same checklist as clearance and approval. Our overview of the MRU clinical placement process lays out the order, and American Data Bank at MRU covers the clearance side.

Questions MRU students ask

Does MRU provide liability insurance for nursing students?

Not automatically. You can apply through MRU's clinical department and be billed by MRU, or buy your own individual policy. Whichever you choose, coverage has to begin before your first externship and continue through graduation, with proof filed at least 15 days ahead of the start date.

How much liability coverage does MRU require?

MRU does not publish coverage limits in its catalog or program pages. The requirement for your cohort may be spelled out in the nursing student handbook on the student portal, or in instructions from the clinical department. Sites can set their own expectations too, so ask both before you buy a policy on your own.

Do I need to send new proof for every clinical course?

MRU's rule is that coverage stays active until graduation and that proof is due at least 15 days before an externship starts. If your policy renews during the program, the renewed certificate is what shows coverage on your next start date. Ask the clinical department whether it wants proof for every clinical course or only when a policy changes.

What happens if I submit proof 10 days before my externship?

That misses MRU's rule, which asks for proof at least 15 days before the start date, and the catalog says the course may then be dropped from your schedule. If you are already inside the window, contact the clinical department and your program chair immediately and ask what can still be done for this term.

Is my employer's malpractice policy enough for MRU?

Probably not on its own. MRU asks for an individual policy, and workplace coverage is usually arranged by the employer for work done in that job. Ask your employer's risk office whether it covers student activity outside your paid role, then check with MRU's clinical department in writing before relying on it.
