What shapes the cost of placement help
Five things shape a quote: your MRU course, the specialty it calls for, where you live, how soon the course starts and how many hours or courses you want covered. A placement advisor quotes after looking at those, so this page explains each one instead of listing figures. It also sets our help next to the two routes MRU itself offers.

Why you get a quote, not a price list
Two MRU students in the same program can need very different searches. One needs an adult primary-care preceptor ten minutes from home for MSN5700. Another needs 405 hours of lifespan psychiatric care for MSN6065C, in a county with only a handful of psychiatric practices. A single figure would overcharge the first student and misstate the work for the second.
So we ask first and quote second. The quote spells out what the search covers for your course, and you decide from there. Nothing on this page is a price, and nothing here changes what MRU charges you. To start, a placement advisor needs only your program, course, city and semester.

None of these factors is unusual. Most quotes involve all five, and the sections below explain how each one plays out for MRU students.
Your course and its specialty
The course matters more than the program name. MRU's FNP courses each ask for a different patient group: adults and older adults in MSN5700, women from menarche to the end of pregnancy in MSN6050, infants to adolescents in MSN6150, and one setting across the lifespan in MSN6400. A family practice may suit one course and not the next.
Certificates add their own shape. The PMHNP certificate's 765 clinical hours must include child and adolescent work and psychotherapy, and the AGACNP certificate's 810 hours are all acute care, which points toward hospitals and their affiliation rules. The Healthcare Systems Leadership practicum needs a nurse leader rather than a clinician. A setting with fewer willing preceptors takes longer to fill, and the quote reflects that.
Where you live and when the course starts
Location changes a search more than students expect. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach have many practices within a drive, but also many schools asking the same preceptors. A smaller town in another SARA state may have fewer practices, and every preceptor there has to meet that state's license rules. We search in person near where you live, so your address is part of the quote.
Timing matters just as much. A search that starts a full semester ahead can move at the pace practices prefer. One that starts three weeks before the term has to run many calls in parallel, and it collides with MRU's own steps: approval before any hours and insurance proof at least 15 days before the externship. Hours and how many courses you want covered
Some students want help with one course, often the one where their own contacts ran out. Others want a plan for the whole clinical sequence. MRU prints no FNP clinical-hour total, but its 45-hours-per-credit rule puts the four FNP clinical courses at about 765 hours, which is a lot of preceptor time to line up; the FNP hours page shows that calculation.
A quote for a sequence plans each course's preceptor in turn, because each course may need a different setting. A quote for one course covers that course only. Either way, the quote also states how a replacement search works if a preceptor withdraws partway through the term. Tell us which courses you have covered already.
How this compares with MRU's own routes
MRU gives NP and Healthcare Systems Leadership students two routes, and our help sits inside the first one.
- Secure your own approved preceptor. Whether you find the preceptor alone or with help, MRU's FNP fee table says its Practicum Affiliation Fee is waived for students who secure an approved preceptor. If you use a service, you pay that service's quote instead.
- Let MRU appoint one. If you do not provide a preceptor, MRU assigns one and charges what its tables call the one-time Practicum Affiliation Fee.
MRU publishes the amount in the fee table on each program page and in its July 2025 Bursar Addendum, so you can set the two side by side yourself. Separately, MRU lists a Practicum Credentialing Fee for verifying preceptor credentials in the FNP, AGACNP, PMHNP and DNP tables; the tables do not say whether it depends on the route you choose. The FNP certificate's table leaves out the affiliation line, although the catalog still describes an appointment for a fee, so ask the Office of Academic Affairs which applies to you.

What a quote does and does not include
A quote covers our work: finding a preceptor and site matched to your course, the fit checks, help assembling what MRU reviews, and a new search if the preceptor withdraws, on the terms the quote sets out.
Never part of a quote
- MRU tuition and MRU's own fees, including Typhon, American Data Bank, the Level II background check and any make-up hour fee
- Your liability insurance, whether bought through MRU's clinical department or on your own
- Immunizations, titers and physicals at MRU Health or elsewhere
- MRU's approval, which no payment to anyone can buy

Questions MRU students ask
Is the quote different for the FNP certificate than for the MSN-FNP?
It can be. Both use the same four clinical courses, but MRU says currently certified NPs may need only part of the certificate after a gap analysis. If your gap analysis removes a clinical course, there is nothing to search for in that course. Send us your plan of study and the quote will follow the courses you actually take.
Does paying for placement help mean MRU will approve my preceptor?
Approval is MRU's decision, made through the Office of Academic Affairs or whichever approver your program names, and MRU runs its own credential check. What placement help gives you is a preceptor who fits and paperwork presented well, so MRU's review starts with everything it needs.
Can I get a quote for just one course?
Yes. Some students only need help with the course where their own search stalled, such as MSN6150 pediatrics or a PMHNP rotation that needs child and adolescent hours. Tell us the course code and the semester, and the quote covers that course alone, with nothing added for courses you have already arranged.
Why does a course starting soon change the quote?
A short runway means contacting many practices at once instead of a few at a time, and it leaves little slack for MRU's approval, clearance and the 15-day insurance deadline. The search is more work in less time. If the dates cannot realistically work, a placement advisor will tell you so before you commit.
Does my availability affect the quote?
It can. A preceptor's clinic hours have to meet yours, and MRU warns that externship hours may fall on any shift, including nights, weekends and holidays. A student who can give two weekdays has a smaller pool of practices that fit than one who can give four. Tell us your real availability so the quote matches the search.
