Wyoming nurses and Miami Regional University's online programs
Wyoming belongs to SARA, so MRU's NP certificates, MSN-FNP, DNP, leadership MSN and RN-to-BSN can enroll you as a resident. For post-licensure programs like these, the Wyoming State Board of Nursing asks for no approval, but it does want two things before clinicals begin: a written notice from the school and a contract, already signed, between the school and your clinical facility.

Which MRU programs you can take from Wyoming
Your Wyoming address keeps you within MRU's residency condition, which asks online students to stay in a SARA state, Florida included, for the whole program (residency rule). In MRU's 2025 NC-SARA licensure disclosure, Wyoming carries "Meets" for the FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP programs. The catalog limits MRU's licensure promise to Florida and tells everyone outside Florida to check with their own board before enrolling; yours is the Wyoming State Board of Nursing (WSBN).

Chapter 6: a notice and a contract, not an approval
Chapter 6 of the Board's rules sorts out-of-state programs into two groups. For pre-licensure LPN and RN programs, Board permission is required. The lighter path is for post-licensure programs, and the Board names RN-to-BSN, MSN, DNP and APRN programs as belonging there.
- Registration or NC-SARAAn out-of-state program needs one of two credentials: approval through NC-SARA, or registration with Wyoming's Department of Education. MRU's catalog says it participates in SARA.
- Written notice to the BoardEach Wyoming clinical learning experience a student will have must be reported to WSBN by the program in writing; the Board offers a sample cover letter.
- Facility contractAhead of the first clinical day, the program must have a signed written contract with the clinical facility, with a copy held for the Board.
Both the notice and the contract are MRU's to handle, and both depend on you naming a facility early. Ask the Office of Academic Affairs how MRU handles Wyoming notices and who signs facility contracts.
Wyoming wants the facility contract signed before your first clinical day. A preceptor who agrees the week before term leaves MRU very little time.
Full practice across a few small cities
AANP lists Wyoming as full practice, so NPs there work on their own license without a physician agreement. The Board's rule that preceptors hold a Wyoming or multistate RN or APRN license is written for pre-licensure programs; for an MRU student, MRU's own handbook criteria decide (MRU's preceptor requirements).
Cheyenne had about 103,000 people in 2025, Casper about 81,000 and the Gillette area about 48,000. Wyoming NP students usually look to Sheridan Memorial Hospital, Ivinson Memorial Hospital (a UCHealth affiliate in Laramie), Gillette's Campbell County Health, Casper's Banner Wyoming Medical Center, which belongs to Arizona-based Banner Health, and Cheyenne Regional Medical Center; none is presented here as an MRU site. No Wyoming preceptor incentive was recorded in our research.
Licenses: the NLC now, the APRN Compact later
Since 19 January 2018 Wyoming has taken part in the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact, so a resident's multistate license covers Wyoming clinicals and fulfills the DNP's license requirement. Wyoming has also enacted the APRN Compact, placing it in Article 3 of Chapter 21 under Title 33 of its statutes, but with five enacting states it cannot operate until seven join. Questions MRU students ask
Is Board approval needed before MRU students train in Wyoming?
No. Board approval is not required of post-licensure programs under WSBN's Chapter 6 rules, and that category covers APRN, RN-to-BSN, MSN and DNP programs. Three duties remain for the school: NC-SARA approval or Wyoming Department of Education registration, a written notice to the Board, and a signed contract with your facility. MRU also approves your preceptor before any hours count.
What should I give MRU so it can send the Wyoming notice in time?
The rule does not list what the notice must contain, and the Board offers a sample cover letter. MRU will likely want the facility's name and address, your preceptor and your planned dates, so pass those on as soon as they are firm, and ask MRU whether the notice or the facility contract should come first.

Can a Wyoming NP precept me without a collaborating physician?
Wyoming is a full-practice state, so an experienced NP there does not need a physician agreement to practice, and nothing in the Wyoming rules gathered here requires one for precepting. MRU still decides whether the NP meets its own criteria, which live in the student handbook on the portal.
