Miami Regional University nursing programs from Alabama
Alabama is a SARA state, so MRU's MSN-FNP, NP certificates, RN-to-BSN and leadership MSN are open to you while you live there. The catch is procedural: the Alabama Board of Nursing will not let an out-of-state program's students start clinicals until that program has filed with it and been approved.

MRU programs an Alabama resident can enroll in
MRU's NC-SARA licensure disclosure rates Alabama "Meets" for its FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP tracks. The catalog is more cautious: it commits to licensure requirements in Florida only and asks out-of-state students to check first with their home board, here the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN). The SARA residency rule is why you must live in Alabama for the whole program.

Reduced practice and who precepts NP students in Alabama
AANP classifies Alabama as reduced practice. Alabama's Board of Medical Examiners and its Board of Nursing share oversight of NP practice, and each NP there needs a collaborating physician under a regulated agreement that covers at least one element of practice. The NP you ask to precept you therefore works with a collaborating physician, who may also want to know a student is joining. Birmingham, with about 1.2 million people in 2025, is the largest metro and home to UAB Medicine. Huntsville (about 556,000) has Huntsville Hospital Health System; In Mobile (about 412,000) you find USA Health, the academic system of the University of South Alabama, alongside Infirmary Health; Montgomery (about 389,000) has Baptist Health. These are examples of where NP students in Alabama look, not sites with any link to MRU.
The ABN filing that comes before your first Alabama shift
Alabama Administrative Code r. 610-X-3-.09 sets a deadline for nursing programs based in other states, prelicensure and advanced practice alike: no later than 15 days before clinical learning experiences begin in Alabama, the program files a letter of intent and its approval documents with the ABN. It must list you and your clinical supervisor, each with a license number, and identify the facility, whose Director of Nursing or CNO provides a statement. A yearly out-of-state program fee is also due, and until the Board has approved the program and that fee is paid, the ABN does not let its students attend clinicals in Alabama.
The filing is MRU's to make, but it runs on details only you and your preceptor can supply. Settle both well ahead of the 15-day line and ask the Office of Academic Affairs whether MRU has an Alabama filing in place.

Your RN license for clinicals in Alabama
For clinical experiences in Alabama, the ABN's FAQ requires post-licensure students (MSN, RN-to-BSN and DNP study all count) to hold a valid, unencumbered Alabama RN license or a multistate license from a Compact party state. Since 1 January 2020, when Alabama implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact, an Alabama multistate license covers that rule and also meets the DNP's Compact-license condition for admission.
An Alabama or multistate license is also required of faculty teaching nursing courses to Alabama students for over 30 days a year, which is one reason the filing takes MRU time. There is more on MRU clinicals outside Florida.

Questions MRU students ask
Can I start an MRU clinical in Alabama while the ABN filing is pending?
No. Until the out-of-state program holds Board approval and has paid its annual fee, the Alabama Board of Nursing bars its students from clinicals in the state. The filing must reach the ABN at least 15 days before clinicals begin, so a preceptor confirmed the week before term is too late. Ask MRU where its Alabama filing stands.
Will my Alabama preceptor get the APTIP tax credit for teaching me?
Not for an MRU rotation. The Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, run through the Alabama Statewide AHEC office, credits uncompensated preceptors in underserved rural areas per 160-hour rotation, but only for programs physically located in Alabama. MRU is in Miami Springs, Florida, so no credit follows your rotation. Mention it up front with anyone who has precepted Alabama-school students.
Does my Alabama preceptor need a Florida license?
No. Florida's rule 64B9-4.001(13) requires a Florida license only when the clinical setting is in Florida. An Alabama preceptor is licensed under Alabama law, and the ABN filing records that license number. MRU still verifies credentials and approves the preceptor, and its own qualification rules sit in the student handbook on the MRU PORTAL.
Is MRU's AGACNP certificate practical from Alabama?
Yes, with one trip: the certificate is online except for a required three-day skills and simulation weekend on the Miami Springs campus in semester I. The 810 acute-care hours usually happen in hospitals, where the ABN filing's statement from a Director of Nursing or CNO comes into play.
