MRU nursing clinicals when you live in Indiana

RN-BSN and graduate nursing programs fall outside what Indiana's State Board of Nursing reviews or accredits, by its own account, so MRU students living there skip one layer of state paperwork. What remains is finding a preceptor in a reduced-practice state and getting that person approved by MRU.

Your MRU options as an Indiana resident

Indiana is a SARA member, and MRU's licensure disclosure for NC-SARA gives each of the three NP tracks a "Meets" there. MRU's catalog adds a caution that is worth reading literally: the only state whose licensure requirements MRU commits to is Florida, and anyone living elsewhere is told to consult that state's board. For you that is the Indiana State Board of Nursing, run through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.

Why the Indiana Board stays out of graduate clinicals

According to its education page, the Board accredits every Indiana nursing program leading to a first RN or LPN license, and it neither reviews nor accredits RN-BSN programs or graduate-level nursing programs of any kind. The same limit shows up in 848 IAC 1-2-4, the eligible-program rule, which applies to RN and PN programs at the pre-licensure level and nothing else. Nothing we found in the Board's material asks a graduate or RN-to-BSN program based outside Indiana to obtain approval before its students train in the state.

That leaves three checkpoints: onboarding at whichever site takes you, clearance via American Data Bank, and MRU signing off on the preceptor before your first counted hour. The Office of Academic Affairs at MRU can confirm nothing else is needed for Indiana.

Reduced practice, and where Indiana NP students look

AANP lists Indiana as reduced practice, meaning at least one part of an NP's practice runs under a regulated collaborative agreement with a physician. The NP who says yes to you will usually have that physician relationship in place, and some practices will want the physician to know a student is coming. MRU's qualification rules for preceptors live in the student handbook; this page sums up what is public.

Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood is the largest metro, at about 2.2 million people in 2025, followed by Fort Wayne at about 466,000. About 729,000 Indiana residents live in the Chicago metro and about 281,000 in the Louisville metro. Among the systems Indiana NP students consider are Franciscan Health, Ascension St. Vincent, Parkview Health, Indiana University Health and Community Health Network. Read that as a sketch of the market only; none of them has agreed to host MRU students. Our research turned up no Indiana incentive for preceptors.

Indiana's multistate license, at home and over the border

Indiana has used the Nurse Licensure Compact since 1 July 2020. An Indiana multistate RN license covers clinicals in Indiana and in other Compact states, and it meets the Florida-or-Compact license condition for MRU's DNP.

Borders are where it gets interesting. Illinois is not in the Compact, so hours at a Chicago practice need an Illinois license, however close to the state line you live. Kentucky is in the Compact, but it sets its own preceptor rules for online APRN programs. Before you plan hours outside Indiana, read MRU clinicals outside Florida and ask MRU.

Questions MRU students ask

Is there an Indiana approval step MRU must clear before my clinicals?

Not from what the Board publishes. By its own description, the Board neither reviews nor accredits graduate or RN-BSN nursing programs, and its rule on eligible programs is limited to RN and PN programs before licensure. That reading comes from the Board's own pages, not from a conversation with Board staff, so check with MRU before your first clinical day.

I live in Northwest Indiana. Can I train at a practice in Chicago?

Only with an Illinois RN license. Illinois sits outside the Compact, so your Indiana multistate license gives no privilege there. On top of that, Illinois rule 1300.340(n) sets a filing for programs based in other states, and it is unclear whether that applies to graduate programs. An Indiana site keeps things simpler. Can a Louisville preceptor count if I live in southern Indiana?

Possibly, but Kentucky's Board of Nursing says preceptors for online APRN programs in Kentucky clinical settings must hold Kentucky RN and APRN licenses, or only the Kentucky APRN license if they live in a Compact state. Your Indiana multistate license covers you in Kentucky. Clear the plan with MRU first.

Does my Indiana license qualify me for MRU's DNP?

Yes, as long as it is a multistate license. The DNP's admission rule names two options: an active, unencumbered Florida RN license, or one issued by an eNLC state, which Indiana has been since July 2020. Keep in mind the DNP builds leadership skills through 765 indirect practice hours with a project mentor; it does not train you as an NP.
