MRU from Iowa: the Board's checklist, ARNP preceptors, licenses
Out-of-state programs get no approval from the Iowa Board of Nursing, but they do get a published checklist, and Iowa sets rules for who can precept an ARNP student. Iowa is in SARA, so MRU's distance programs accept you.

MRU programs you can take from Iowa
MRU's professional licensure disclosure lists Iowa with FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP all "Meets". MRU's catalog keeps its own promise narrow: Florida is the one state where it vouches for licensure requirements, so Iowans are asked to check with the Iowa Board of Nursing, housed in Iowa's Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing, before they start.

Iowa's checklist for out-of-state nursing programs
The Board lists what out-of-state programs must still do in Iowa:
- hold operating approval in the state from the Bureau of Iowa College Aid
- comply with Iowa law on top of their own state's rules, and supply data to the Board on request
- confirm that every nursing faculty member and preceptor working in Iowa has an active license, either Iowa or multistate
- sign clinical contracts spelling out what each party is responsible for, that faculty control student learning, and how the contract is reviewed yearly and ended
Those items are MRU's to handle, not yours, but a missing clinical contract can hold up a start date. Check with the Office of Academic Affairs that MRU has Iowa's items in place before you settle on a site. The page also says the nursing program and the clinical facility both approve preceptors, which sits alongside MRU's own approval step.
ARNP preceptors under Iowa's rules
Iowa's license title for NPs is ARNP, and AANP rates the state as full practice. Rule 481 IAC 616.16 covers preceptorships in ARNP programs. It asks that most of a student's experiences be supervised by an ARNP or physician sharing the student's role and population focus, requires each preceptor to be licensed in their own practice state, and calls for a yearly review of the written preceptorship agreement. In FNP courses, that means family practice preceptors; in the PMHNP certificate, psychiatric clinicians. MRU's own rules sit in the student handbook; see who can precept for MRU.
Des Moines-West Des Moines is the biggest metro (about 759,000 in 2025), with Cedar Rapids (about 279,000), Iowa City (about 183,000) and the Iowa half of Davenport-Moline-Rock Island (about 175,000) behind it. Iowa NP students tend to weigh three large systems, UnityPoint Health, MercyOne and University of Iowa Health Care; naming them here implies no MRU arrangement. Iowa also lets a nurse count 6 contact hours toward renewal for precepting a student for at least 60 hours, documented by the supervising institution.
Your license at an Iowa site
In Iowa, a post-licensure student in training must hold either an active Iowa license or an active multistate one, and must practice under Iowa Code. With Iowa in the Compact from 19 January 2018, an Iowa multistate license works at home, in other Compact states and for the DNP's Florida-or-Compact rule. Iowa's student exemption in Iowa Code 152.1 does not help you: it leaves out anyone who already holds an RN, LPN or ARNP license anywhere in the country.

Questions MRU students ask
I live in Davenport. Can I use a preceptor in Moline or Rock Island?
Not on your Iowa multistate license alone. Moline and Rock Island sit in Illinois, a non-Compact state, so those hours would require an Illinois RN license. On top of that, Illinois has a filing rule for visiting programs with an unclear scope. An Iowa-side site is simpler; see our Illinois guide.
Does the Iowa Board of Nursing approve MRU?
No, and it does not need to. According to the Board, it gives no approval to programs based in other states; what it asks instead is that they complete a checklist, beginning with the Bureau of Iowa College Aid authorizing them to operate in Iowa. Whether MRU has done those things is a question for MRU.
Can a physician precept my MRU FNP hours in Iowa?
Under Iowa's ARNP preceptorship rule, most experiences can be with a physician rather than an ARNP as long as the role and population focus are the same, so a family physician fits Iowa's wording for FNP courses. For you, though, the deciding text is MRU's student handbook on the MRU PORTAL, so read its preceptor section before asking.
Will my Iowa preceptor get anything for teaching me?
Continuing education credit, possibly. Precepting a student within an organized preceptorship program for no fewer than 60 hours earns a nurse 6 contact hours toward Iowa license renewal, with the supervising institution supplying the documentation. Ask MRU whether it provides that documentation before you mention it.
