Maine and MRU: online study, clinicals close to home
Nothing we found in the Maine State Board of Nursing's rules makes an out-of-state program ask permission before a Maine clinical rotation. The harder part in Maine is the size of the preceptor pool: three metros, four large systems, and NPs who need 24 months of supervised practice before they work independently.

MRU programs and Maine residents
Maine takes part in SARA, and on MRU's 2025 NC-SARA disclosure each NP track shows "Meets" beside Maine. The catalog confines MRU's own licensure commitment to Florida and points distance students to their state regulator, which for Mainers means the Maine State Board of Nursing.

What Maine's nursing rules say, and what they leave out
Chapter 7 is the Board's education rule, and its title, Regulations for Approval of Prelicensure Nursing Education Programs, sums up its scope. Its subject is Maine programs leading to a first license; schools in other states placing students at Maine sites get no mention. Nor did we find guidance on that point linked from the Board's education pages or its list of rules.
Maine's student exemption, found at 32 MRSA §2103(2), covers only people in Board-approved programs leading to initial licensure, so it does not fit an RN in an MRU graduate or RN-to-BSN program. You practice on your own license. Silence is not the same as permission; MRU's academic affairs office should confirm nothing more is needed for Maine.
Maine's 24-month transition and the preceptor pool
AANP counts Maine as full practice, though a new NP reaches that status only after 24 months or more of one of two things: working under a physician's or NP's supervision, or being employed by a clinic or hospital that has a physician as medical director. A newly licensed NP may still be inside that window, which matters when you ask who is experienced enough to teach. MRU keeps its qualification rules in a handbook that is not public; MRU's preceptor requirements gathers what is.
Portland-South Portland, with about 578,000 people in 2025, is by far the largest metro. Bangor is next at about 158,000, followed by Lewiston-Auburn at about 116,000. MaineHealth, MaineGeneral Health, Northern Light Health and Central Maine Healthcare are the systems students tend to approach. We mention them as the market, not as MRU sites, and found no Maine preceptor incentive to offer anyone who teaches you.
License and MRU clearance from Maine
Maine's Compact participation began on 19 January 2018. Hold your Maine RN license as multistate and it covers clinical hours in Maine and in New Hampshire and other Compact states, and meets the DNP's admission condition.
Distance adds one wrinkle. The catalog wants your vaccination record verified by a provider who holds a Florida license, and says nothing about how students far from Florida manage it. Raise that early with Academic Affairs, before uploading records to American Data Bank. Fingerprints for the Level II check and an individual insurance policy, proven 15 days out, come next. Questions MRU students ask
Does Maine's student exemption apply to MRU students?
Not in its own words. The statute, 32 MRSA §2103(2), exempts people studying in a Board-approved program that leads to their first license. MRU's online NP, leadership and RN-to-BSN students already hold an RN license and practice on it, so the exemption is beside the point for them. What you need is an active Maine or multistate RN license.
Is an NP in their first two years of Maine practice a possible preceptor?
Maine law does not address that directly. Its 24-month rule concerns when an NP can practice without supervision, not who may teach. MRU's portal-only handbook carries its preceptor qualifications, and MRU approves each person, so read that section before relying on someone early in their career.
Could I use a preceptor in New Hampshire?
Your Maine multistate license covers you there, since New Hampshire is also a Compact state. A New Hampshire site answers to New Hampshire's rules, which MRU should see before any hours are booked there. MRU's residency rule looks at where you live, which stays Maine. See our New Hampshire page.
How does the AGACNP campus weekend work from Maine?
Expect three 8-hour days in Miami Springs during your first semester, and you must pass them to move on. Book flights early. You also enter with current ACLS and BLS, and the 810 clinical hours are in acute care, which usually means hospitals. See the AGACNP certificate.
