Clinical logs and case lists at MRU: due by the last day

In MRU's NP programs, your logs, case lists and other clinical documentation are due by the last day of the course, together with the signed end-of-course evaluation. If anything is missing on that date, the course is failed. Falsified logs carry a heavier penalty still: course failure and possible dismissal.

The rule, as the catalog writes it

The same practicum rule appears four times in the 2025 catalog: in the MSN-FNP section and in the FNP, PMHNP and AGACNP certificate sections. Each says that all practicum hours must be completed with a University-approved preceptor before the last day of the course, and that logs, case lists, documentation and a signed end-of-course evaluation are required by that date.

The consequence sits in the same paragraph. If the hours or the paperwork are not complete by the course's last day, the course is failed. A separate grading rule adds that failing any component of an MSN concentration course, the preceptorship included, records an F for the whole course.

The catalog does not repeat this exact wording for the DNP, the leadership MSN or the RN-to-BSN. Expect something similar in those programs, and read your syllabus for the version that applies to you.

What each piece is for

MRU names the pieces but publishes no templates, minimum patient numbers or required fields for any of them. Here is what each one does, in plain terms, and what to confirm in your syllabus.

  • Time log: the dates and hours you worked with your approved preceptor. Confirm whether your preceptor has to verify it, and how.
  • Case list: the patients or encounters you took part in. Confirm the fields, any minimum number and how populations are coded.
  • Other documentation: whatever else the syllabus lists. MRU's catalog does not itemize it, so get the list in writing.
  • End-of-course evaluation: signed by the preceptor, the clinical instructor and you. The evaluation page covers how to get all three signatures in time.

Ask these questions in the first week of the course, not the last. The answers shape how you record every shift that follows, and changing format halfway through a term creates gaps.

Where the records are kept, by program

MRU names a tracking system in only two kinds of public document: the fee tables in the Bursar addendum and program pages, and the DNP addendum. Where a row says none is named, that does not mean nothing is used. It means the public record is silent, and your course faculty will know.

Each named system has its own guide: Typhon for the FNP and pre-licensure programs, and myevaluation.com for the DNP.

The falsified-log rule

The catalog is blunt on this point. Falsified time logs, misrepresented hours and false documentation of client encounters mean failing the course and possible dismissal from the program. The rule appears on the MSN-FNP program page as well as in the catalog.

Most trouble comes from shortcuts rather than outright invention. These habits keep you well clear of it.

  • Record the hours you worked, not the hours you were scheduled for.
  • Never log time with a preceptor MRU has not approved, even if you mean to sort it out later.
  • Do not copy case entries from a classmate at the same site.
  • Keep your log and any timesheet your preceptor keeps in step, date for date.
  • If you find a mistake, correct it openly and tell your clinical instructor.

Hours that must show a mix

Some courses need your records to prove more than a total. The PMHNP certificate's 765 clinical hours must include 115 hours with children and adolescents, 150 hours of psychotherapy and 500 across the lifespan. MRU does not say publicly how that split is recorded, so ask before your first shift in MSN5056C; the PMHNP clinical courses page has the course detail.

Each FNP course has its own population. MSN5700 covers adult and geriatric care, MSN6050 women from menarche to the end of pregnancy, MSN6150 infants to adolescents, and MSN6400 the lifespan in one setting. A case list that shows the right patients for the course is part of passing it.

Whatever the course, keep names, dates of birth and other patient identifiers out of your records. MRU requires students to follow HIPAA and each site's privacy policies, and a violation can mean course failure and dismissal.

Working back from the last day

  1. Find the real last dayYour syllabus says whether the course runs the full 16-week semester or one 8-week module. In Fall 2026 the semester ends December 20 and Module 1 ends October 25.
  2. Set your own finish dateAim to finish hours a week or two early, which leaves room for a canceled shift or a sick preceptor.
  3. Close the log as you goMake sure every shift is entered and every case list is complete before your final shift, not after it.
  4. Book the evaluationAgree a date inside the course dates with your preceptor and clinical instructor for the signed evaluation.
  5. Check that it arrivedConfirm with your clinical instructor that everything was received. A document that never arrived counts as missing.

If you are already behind, the behind on clinical hours page covers your options, and the failing a clinical course page explains what an F means for the rest of your sequence.

Questions MRU students ask

Can I finish my MRU clinical logs after the course ends?

For the NP programs the catalog says no: logs, case lists and documentation are due by the course's last day, or the course is failed. MRU's Incomplete policy is separate and needs at least 80% of the course done plus faculty and Dean approval. Whether it can cover late paperwork is not spelled out, so ask before the last day. See the Incomplete page.

What goes on an MRU case list?

MRU does not publish a case-list template or a list of required fields. The syllabus for your course, the nursing student handbook on the student portal and your clinical instructor are the sources. Ask what counts as one case, whether a minimum number applies, and how each encounter should be tagged by age group or population.

Does my preceptor have to sign my clinical logs?

MRU's public documents say the preceptor signs the end-of-course evaluation, along with your clinical instructor and you. They do not say whether each log or timesheet also needs the preceptor's signature or confirmation. That is a course-level detail, so check the syllabus and ask your clinical instructor in the first week.

What counts as a falsified log at MRU?

The catalog names falsified time logs, misrepresented hours and false documentation of client encounters. That would reasonably cover claiming hours you did not work, presenting time with an unapproved preceptor as approved time, or listing patients you did not see. The penalty is course failure and possible dismissal, so correct any error openly.

Is there a fee for making up missed clinical hours at MRU?

Yes, where make-up is allowed. The catalog says missing externship hours or outcomes fail the course, and it lists a fee for each make-up hour; the amount is in the catalog's cost tables. Make-up work is normally not accepted, though faculty may allow it for verifiable extenuating circumstances. Ask early if a shift falls through.
