New Mexico is listed in MRU's NC-SARA disclosure, where the FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP tracks carry a "Meets" rating. The catalog keeps its promise narrower, covering licensure requirements in Florida only and pointing everyone else to their home board, which for you is the New Mexico Board of Nursing (NMBON).

The one-semester trigger in 16.12.3 NMAC
The semester trigger sits in 16.12.3.11(A)(2) NMAC. Any program running clinical or field experience in New Mexico across more than one semester shall apply for the Board's approval of the clinical placement. Programs holding another state's board approval also have to clear the 16.12.3.12 minimum standards. Part 16.12.3 describes itself as covering programs that prepare people for licensure in New Mexico; RN-to-BSN and NP programs get no separate treatment in it.
That leaves a real question, because MRU's NP clinicals run across several semesters: a full-time MSN-FNP student meets MSN5700, then the paired MSN6050 and MSN6150, then MSN6400, in three consecutive terms. Who New Mexico calls a preceptor
NMBON's education rules set three conditions for a clinical preceptor: at least two years of experience, a license no lower than the level the student is working toward, and no acceptance of financial incentives offered by the nursing program in return for an assigned student. Those 16.12.3.12 standards bind any program from another state that has approval for New Mexico placements. MRU's own criteria sit in its handbook, and our summary of MRU preceptor rules shows how little of that is public.
AANP rates New Mexico as full practice, so NP-owned clinics are part of the landscape. In 2025 Albuquerque had about 925,000 residents. Smaller metros follow: Farmington near 120,000, Santa Fe near 157,000 and Las Cruces near 229,000. The major systems are Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Lovelace Health System, CHRISTUS St. Vincent in Santa Fe and the UNM Health System, which is New Mexico's only academic medical center; we name them to orient you, not because any is known to host MRU students.
Compact license, a new fee and Florida paperwork
New Mexico's Compact membership began on 19 January 2018, and since 1 June 2026 NMBON has charged a separate fee for the multistate compact license. That license covers clinical shifts in New Mexico and every other member state, and it meets the DNP's Florida-or-Compact license rule. New Mexico has no APRN Compact law.

Questions MRU students ask
Does New Mexico's one-semester rule apply to MRU's FNP?
It is not settled. The rule asks programs with more than one semester of clinical experience in New Mexico to apply for Board approval, but Part 16.12.3 is framed around preparing people for licensure in New Mexico, with nothing separate on NP programs. MRU's FNP clinicals span three semesters full-time, so ask MRU how it reads the rule before you begin.
Does NMBON's preceptor definition apply to my MRU preceptor?
It applies to programs under Part 16.12.3, including those based in other states that are approved for New Mexico placements, which must meet its minimum standards. The definition asks for two years of experience, a license at or above the student's target level, and no financial incentive from the nursing program. Whatever the Board position, MRU must still approve your preceptor under its handbook criteria.
What does the new multistate license fee mean for me?
From 1 June 2026, NMBON charges a separate fee for a multistate compact license; the Board's RN page lists the amount. If you hold or renew a multistate license, that fee is part of keeping it, and the same license is what lets you train in other Compact states and meet MRU's DNP rule.
Can I complete MRU's AGACNP certificate from New Mexico?
Yes, with two things planned. You must pass an on-campus skills and simulation weekend lasting three days in Miami Springs during semester I. The clinical courses then run over two semesters, MSN5040C and MSN5041C in semester II and MSN5042C in semester III, which takes you past New Mexico's one-semester trigger, so confirm MRU's position on 16.12.3.11 first.
