Studying at Miami Regional University from Rhode Island
Rhode Island belongs to SARA, so MRU's graduate NP tracks, its leadership MSN and its RN-to-BSN accept you as long as your home stays there. No Rhode Island rule was found that makes MRU seek Board approval first; the real question is how each site books students from a school outside the state.

What a Rhode Island resident can take at MRU
MRU's NC-SARA licensure disclosure includes Rhode Island and marks FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP "Meets" there. The catalog is narrower. Only for Florida does it promise that licensure requirements are met; students elsewhere are sent to their home board, which in Rhode Island means its Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education. A Rhode Island address kept for the whole program satisfies the SARA residency rule.

Full practice, one metro and four systems
Rhode Island is a full-practice state in AANP's listing, so the NPs you approach work under their own license rather than a physician agreement. An independent NP in primary care or psychiatry can agree to teach you without clearing it with a collaborating doctor. MRU still decides whether that person qualifies, under rules kept in its portal-only handbook; see MRU's preceptor requirements.
Nearly the whole state sits inside one metro. Census estimates put Providence-Warwick at about 1.71 million people in 2025, roughly 1.11 million of them on the Rhode Island side. NP students there often weigh Brown University Health against Care New England Health System, with South County Health and CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island also in the mix; they are listed to show the landscape, not as sites known to take MRU students.
No Board filing found, but ask about the registry
The state's nurse licensing and education rule, 216-RICR-40-05-3, reviewed for this page, holds no requirement that a program from another state win Board approval before its students start clinicals in Rhode Island. That regulation governs Rhode Island's own basic nursing programs.
For those home-state programs, the rule also requires clinical agency agreements to demonstrate that the program actively takes part in Rhode Island's central clinical placement registry. The text is silent on whether that duty extends to a Florida school. Ask every facility early how it schedules outside students and whether it needs an agreement with MRU, and raise the answer with MRU's Office of Academic Affairs before you count on the site.
A preceptor's yes is not the facility's yes. In Rhode Island, ask how the site books out-of-state students before you tell MRU it is settled.
Licensing: back in the Compact since 2024
Rhode Island came back into the Nurse Licensure Compact on 1 January 2024, although NCSBN's implementation table gives 8 January 2024. RN licenses that the Rhode Island Department of Health issues to qualified residents after that date are multistate, the department says. If your license predates that, have the Board confirm its status before you count on it for the DNP's Compact-license condition.

Questions MRU students ask
Does Rhode Island make MRU register before I train there?
Not that we could find. Its standards apply to nursing programs based in Rhode Island, and it sets no step for out-of-state schools that place students there. MRU's own gate remains: your preceptor must be approved by MRU before any hours count, and the facility may run its own intake for outside students.
Will a Rhode Island preceptor get paid or a tax credit for teaching me?
Our research recorded no Rhode Island preceptor tax credit or state grant for precepting, so don't mention one when you ask. What you can offer is clarity: your MRU course number, the hours and dates you need, and the fact that MRU asks the preceptor to sign an end-of-course evaluation alongside your clinical instructor.
Can a Rhode Island psychiatric NP cover all of MRU's PMHNP hours?
Possibly, but check the mix. MRU's PMHNP certificate asks for 765 clinical hours; of those, 115 must be with children and adolescents, 150 in psychotherapy and 500 across the lifespan. An adult-only practice will not supply the younger patients, so you may need a second preceptor for that part. See the PMHNP certificate page.
I hold a Rhode Island license from before 2024. Does the DNP accept it?
The DNP wants an active RN license without encumbrances, from Florida or any Compact state. Rhode Island is a Compact state again, but the Department of Health describes multistate licenses as those issued to qualified residents after 1 January 2024. Confirm your license type with the Board before you apply, and ask MRU admissions if it turns out to be single-state.
