Michigan residents in MRU nursing: clinicals and licenses
Three Michigan facts matter most for an MRU student. First, Michigan is not a Compact state. Second, NPs need a physician's delegation before prescribing controlled substances, which is why AANP labels Michigan restricted practice. Third, no Michigan Board of Nursing rule we found makes a school from another state file anything before its students train there.

Which MRU programs Michigan residents can take
Michigan's SARA membership lets MRU enroll you, and its NC-SARA disclosure carries "Meets" beside Michigan for FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP alike. The catalog keeps MRU's own assurance to Florida and sends everyone else to their home regulator; Michigan's is the Board of Nursing within LARA.

No out-of-state filing found; accreditation does the work
Michigan's approval rules for nursing programs (Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301 onward) and the Board's Nursing Education Programs page both concern programs situated inside the state. Nothing we read obliges a school from another state to apply or send notice before its students start Michigan clinicals, though the Board itself was not contacted. When it comes to licensure, Michigan relies on accreditation by ACEN, CNEA or CCNE, not Board approval, to recognize programs from other states. So your Michigan gates are the site's onboarding and MRU's own: clearance through American Data Bank, the Level II fingerprint check, liability insurance and MRU's approval of your preceptor.
Delegated prescribing and who precepts in Michigan
Physician delegation for controlled-substance prescribing is what puts Michigan in AANP's restricted category. It shapes the practices you approach: many Michigan NPs work alongside a delegating physician, and MRU's handbook, summarized in MRU's preceptor requirements, decides which of them can precept you.
In 2025 about 4.39 million people lived in Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, about 1.18 million in Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, about 480,000 in Lansing-East Lansing and about 401,000 in Flint. The systems students tend to look at are McLaren Health Care, Henry Ford Health, Trinity Health Michigan, University of Michigan Health and Corewell Health. Their inclusion describes the market, not an MRU relationship.
For a time MDHHS paid preceptors through a pilot it ran jointly with Michigan State University's College of Nursing, but only for MSU's FNP and PMHNP students, and that pilot has since been completed. We found no Michigan preceptor tax credit.
A Michigan license, and what it will not do
Michigan is not a Compact member; a Compact bill, HB 4246, was pending at the time of research. Clinical hours in Michigan need a Michigan RN license, and that license does not carry into Compact neighbors such as Ohio, Indiana or Wisconsin. Before a first license is issued, applicants pass a criminal background check, take a one-time course on recognizing victims of human trafficking, and show 2 hours of implicit bias training taken during the 5 years leading up to issue.
MRU's DNP will not accept a Michigan license alone, since the state is outside the Compact; plan on a Florida RN license or ask admissions. More on training outside Florida.

Questions MRU students ask
Will my Michigan preceptor be paid through the state's preceptor program?
No. The MDHHS Office of Nursing Programs pilot, run with Michigan State University's College of Nursing, paid preceptors of MSU's FNP and PMHNP students only, based on hours committed over two semesters, and MDHHS describes it as completed. Preceptors of students from out-of-state schools cannot join it, and no preceptor tax credit has been enacted in Michigan.
How do I check that a Michigan NP is properly credentialed?
Michigan grants NP specialty certification only to people with a current Michigan RN license plus national certification from a certifying body the Board recognizes. A Michigan NP preceptor should therefore hold both a Michigan RN license and the NP specialty certification. MRU runs its own credential verification before approving anyone.
Can I do clinical hours in Ohio or Indiana from Michigan?
Only with a license from that state. Both are Compact states, but a Michigan license is single-state, so it gives you no privilege to practice in either. Ohio and Indiana each set their own terms for visiting programs, too. See our Indiana page and tell MRU first.
Does the Michigan Board need to approve MRU for my clinicals?
Not according to anything we found. Michigan's program rules cover programs located in Michigan and recognize out-of-state programs through national accreditation for licensure purposes. Because the Board was not contacted during research, the Office of Academic Affairs at MRU should confirm whether Michigan expects any step.
