New Jersey is a SARA member, so living there does not stop you enrolling in MRU's online NP, RN-to-BSN or leadership programs. Our research found no New Jersey Board rule asking out-of-state programs for approval or notice before clinicals, although the Board's own website could not be checked.

What you can take at MRU from New Jersey
MRU's NC-SARA disclosure includes New Jersey and marks the FNP, AGACNP and PMHNP tracks "Meets" there. Its catalog, by contrast, commits only to Florida's licensure requirements and tells students in other states to ask their own board first. In your case the relevant body is the New Jersey Board of Nursing, which falls under the state's Division of Consumer Affairs.

No Board filing found, with one caveat
Accreditation of programs at institutions licensed through New Jersey's Commission on Higher Education is the subject of the Board's education rules, found in the first subchapter of N.J.A.C. 13:37. Its sole clause on clinical placements, 13:37-1.10(c), addresses the opposite case: New Jersey programs sending students to clinical agencies outside the state. No provision was found requiring an out-of-state program to seek approval or give notice before its students start clinicals in New Jersey.
One caveat: during research the Board's website returned a CAPTCHA security check, so any guidance it posts there is still to be checked. Before you settle on a site, put the New Jersey question to MRU's Office of Academic Affairs, and read MRU clinicals outside Florida for the MRU-side steps.
Absence of a Board rule does not replace MRU's approval: your New Jersey preceptor still needs it before any hour counts.
Joint protocols: reduced practice in New Jersey
New Jersey is reduced practice in AANP's classification. To order medications and devices, an NP there has to maintain joint protocols with a collaborating physician. For you, that means an NP preceptor's prescribing runs under a physician arrangement, which is worth understanding before you ask them to supervise prescribing-heavy courses such as MSN5700. MRU's own rules on who may precept are in the student handbook; see what MRU publishes about preceptors.
The New York-Newark-Jersey City metro takes in roughly 7.1 million New Jersey residents, and about 1.4 million more live on the state's side of Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington; Trenton-Princeton counts about 399,000 people, and Atlantic City-Hammonton roughly 372,000. Among New Jersey systems, the large ones are Hackensack Meridian Health, Virtua Health, RWJBarnabas Health, Atlantic Health System and Camden-based Cooper University Health Care. Listing them is orientation only; MRU is not known to have agreements with any of them.
Licensing since the 2021 Compact start
The Nurse Licensure Compact has been in force in New Jersey since 15 November 2021, when the state implemented it. With New Jersey as your home state, a multistate RN license covers clinicals here and in other member states, and it meets the DNP's requirement of an RN license from Florida or a Compact state. New Jersey has not enacted the APRN Compact.
MRU's own gatekeeping still applies: American Data Bank clearance with its fingerprint-based Level II check, and proof of liability insurance no later than 15 days before your externship.

Does New Jersey require MRU to register before my clinicals start?
Our research found no such rule. N.J.A.C. 13:37 governs New Jersey-based programs, and its clinical clause addresses New Jersey schools placing students out of state. The Board's website could not be checked, so confirm with MRU's Office of Academic Affairs that no New Jersey step applies to your program before you promise a preceptor a start date.
Can I do clinicals in Philadelphia or New York City while living in New Jersey?
The rules differ sharply. Pennsylvania joined the Compact in full in July 2025 and has a regulation letting out-of-state RNs in accredited graduate programs train there. New York is outside the Compact and requires out-of-state nursing programs to be registered or approved by NYSED before placing students. See our New York and Pennsylvania pages.
What does a joint protocol mean for my NP preceptor?
In New Jersey an NP orders medications and devices under joint protocols kept with a collaborating physician. That does not stop the NP precepting you, but prescribing decisions you observe sit inside that arrangement. Ask your preceptor how their protocols work, and make sure the details MRU's credential check needs, including license and certification, are ready early.
How early should a New Jersey student start looking for a preceptor?
Work back from MRU's calendar. Spring 2027 runs 4 January to 25 April, and registration opens 20 days ahead of each semester, while liability insurance proof has to reach MRU 15 days or more before the externship. Preceptor approval must come before any hours count, so give yourself a full semester of lead time where you can. See need a preceptor fast if time is short.
